Pocket Watch

Navigation with a wooden watch?

For a Nightly Adventure Hike with Alice in Wonderland theme, I’ve made a navigation device. In the Alice in Wonderland story, the hare is always looking at his pocket watch, and screams about time.

So for the adventure side, it had to be a magical pocket watch!

The pocketwatch is Laser Cut in 5 layers, with engravings on the front and back. There is used 3 types of paper between the layers; 2 that light up in UV-light, and 1 that doesn’t light up.

This video shows the UV-light effects with the different types of paper used.

During the hike, the Pocket Watch had to be used in these ways:

As a clock. There was a description of something related to time (timetable at the station, find the time of the last train on a Saturday night to a big city) . Turn the hands of the clock, and now they are arrows! Short hand is where you come from, long hand is where you go to.

As a compass. In the hike documentation they would find the special characters that are also printed on the largest insert-ring. Turn the hands in the direction of the character. See that on top there is the N for North.

As a crypto device. In the documentation they would find the decryption setting for each sentence. Turn the small insert till both characters match. Now read the sentence with the matching characters.

As a magical compass. With an UV torch they got for another puzzle, they now had to find the hidden clue on the Pocket Watch. Do you see it?

(hint: XII = N)

And lastly, it could be taken home as a souvenir. There was added an engraving on the back, to make this a device to never forget!

For creating the 11 pocket watches needed, I used my Snapmaker 2 350 with the 40W laser. Because of the smoke, I did move everything to the garage. See here the Snapmaker burning away, and results of my little production line:
